Steady and true as a Bible verse, their love is real … at least for the duration of a song. Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood, who are both married to other people, have teamed up for a new duet professing their ardor for each other, “I’m Gonna Love You.” The song features on the deluxe edition of Johnson’s latest, Leather, which will add about a dozen songs to the track list when it comes out on Nov. 3.

“So good that it almost hurts/Steady and true as a Bible verse,” the artists sing together in the chorus. “My heart skips just thinking of you.” Over a propulsive piano, they blend their voices, singing, “Baby, I’m gonna love you,” and it sounds suave enough that you almost feel like they’re getting lost in the moment.

The artists met backstage at the 2022 CMT Awards and looked for an opportunity to record together since then. When the songwriting team of Chris Stevens, Kelly Archer, and Travis Denning delivered “I’m Gonna Love You” to Johnson, a lightbulb turned on. “From the moment I heard this song, I heard Carrie’s voice on it,” Johnson said in a statement. “It was a non-negotiable for me; either we sing it together, or I wouldn’t sing it at all. It’s that special to me.”

“From the time I first heard his voice, I knew Cody had something special,” Underwood said. “I’m excited for our fans to hear this special collaboration.”

“Working with Carrie has been an absolute pleasure,” Johnson said. “She’s not only one hell of a singer, but she’s a class act all the way around. It warms my heart to work with someone who’s seen so much success in their career and they’re still so down to earth. I feel like this duet is going to be massive in so many ways, and I couldn’t be prouder of it!”

The song could also be viewed as a victory lap for Johnson who won a People’s Choice Country Award on Thursday for his Leather song “Dirt Cheap.” That single, which came out in March, was an immediate hit and certified gold.
