Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon release monologues from home due to coronavirus
As the threat of the coronavirus continues to spread, now showing up in all 50 states, more and more people have decided to self-quarantine, and late-night hosts are no different. Last Thursday, as Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon filmed in near-empty studios with no audiences, an eerie and awkward feeling was pervasive as the seriousness of the coronavirus continued to become more clear. It was the same on Jimmy Kimmel Live as former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg guest-hosted. All three shows announced they would be suspending production for the time being. But entertainers gotta entertain, and Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon have all begun posting short “shows” they recorded at home. Colbert got the ball rolling Monday night, delivering a monologue from his bathtub while wearing a suit, and Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon posted videos on Tuesday.
Fallon delivered a monologue with his wife filming, having to pause a couple times for his daughter, who wanted nothing to do with the show, but became a part of it anyway because she was playing a little too loud.
Kimmel recorded in his home office, where he joked about learning a lot about himself by being isolated, like the fact he has two young children. Kimmel also gave some not-so-helpful tips on how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day while stuck at home.
“Get some food coloring and you can dye a bottle of hand sanitizer green,” Kimmel said. “You’ll never get if off your hands, but it’s festive nonetheless.”
And Colbert posted another video Tuesday night, but this time, instead of the bathtub, he relaxed by the fire pit and sang a revised version of “Oh, Danny Boy.”
“Oh Danny boy, your hands, your hands need washing / From thumb to thumb, and all your fingers too,” Colbert sang. “Quarantine is near, so do your TP shopping / I’ve nearly watched everything they’ve got on Hulu.”
Kimmel and Fallon said they’d continue to release videos every night.
