Stephen Colbert praises students seeking gun control legislation in wake of Parkland shooting
Stephen Colbert took a moment on The Late Show to praise the students of Parkland, Fla., for condemning officials who have done nothing to curb the outbreak of mass shootings.
After berating conservative lawmakers, Colbert said, “There is one group that does give me hope that we can do something to protect the children and, sadly, it’s the children.”
Survivors of the Parkland high school shooting are pleading for stricter gun laws. They’ve stated their case on the news and have appeared at rallies and capitol buildings.
“It’s more than just words,” Colbert said. “These kids are taking action, organizing a series of school walkouts across the country and a march in Washington. These kids are inspiring.”
Even though officials have yet to pass gun or mental health legislation, Colbert said there’s hope for the future. “I hope these kids don’t give up, because this is their lives and their future. Someone else may be in power, but this country belongs to them. And there is reason for hope.”
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
