Colin Farrell Explained Why The Penguin Wasn't Allowed To Smoke In "The Batman"

When The Batman premieres next month, you may notice that The Penguin is missing one key element to his costume.

According to Colin Farrell, who took on the role in the new film, the iconic villain wasn't allowed to have his signature cigarette.

In prior films, The Penguin could be recognized by his trademark top hat, monocle and cigarette but Disney put a stop to smoking in the film.

"Big studios make big decisions around such things as the presence of cigarettes in films," Colin said in an interview with Jake's Takes.

Despite the ban, Colin said he fought for his character to carry a cigar instead but he was still turned down.

"I fought valiantly for a cigar. At one stage I said, 'I can have it unlit! Just let me have it unlit.' They were like, 'No,'" Colin recalled.

He added, "Like a bunch of 12-year-olds are going to start smoking Cuban cigars because [the Penguin is smoking cigars in a movie.]"

But since the film takes place before Oswald Cobblepot’s full transformation into the villainous Penguin, Colin hopes that his costume will be more recognizable in the future.

"I have no idea where it goes but it's the tip of the iceberg. The Oz that we meet hasn't embodied the energy of The Penguin, the one that was recognizable from the source comics and from previous films so if it goes again, I'd love to explore it," Colin said.
