Colin Farrell's Penguin look was inspired by Harvey Weinstein, Fredo from “The Godfather”
Makeup designer Michael Marino talks about creating Farrell's transformation for "The Batman" and "The Penguin" at Comic-Con panel.
Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Michael Marino, the makeup designer who helped transform Colin Farrell into Oz Cobb for 2022's The Batman and the upcoming HBO series The Penguin, said during a Comic-Con 2024 panel Saturday that the look was inspired by a host of sources, including Harvey Weinstein.
Marino spoke to a crowd of fans gathered in Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center, all eagerly waiting to get a sneak peek at The Penguin. During the Q&A conversation, the creative mentioned the disgraced former Hollywood producer who was jailed after his sexual assault trial. (Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction was overturned and he awaits a retrial in New York, though he also faces charges in Los Angeles.)
Marino also mentioned John Cazale's Fredo from The Godfather, as well as "injured birds" as other inspirations.

"I looked at injured birds and older, grizzled penguins, and they had these chipped beaks and all this stuff," Marino told the audience. "So on one side of his face in silhouette, you have this curved, scarred face on the side, but if you line it up with a photo of a bird, it mimics the mouth of a bird."
The Penguin is set one week after the events of The Batman, which starred Robert Pattinson as a new incarnation of the Dark Knight. That film ended with the Riddler, played by Paul Dano, killing mob boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) and blowing up the sea wall to flood Gotham City. The Penguin now focuses on the ensuing power vacuum in the criminal underworld, with Oz trying to seize control.
The Comic-Con panel also revealed a new trailer for the show, laying out the key figures in the upcoming gang war.

Cristin Milioti stars as Carmine's daughter, Sofia Falcone, fresh off a stint in Arkham Asylum, where she served for her egregious crimes as the killer dubbed by the newspapers as "the Hangman." Rhenzy Feliz stars Victor Aguilar, a kid who is just in the wrong place at the wrong time when he finds himself working for Oz.
There's also Michael Kelly as Johnny Viti, a loyal member of the Falcone criminal empire; Clancy Brown as rival mob boss Salvatore Maroni; Shohreh Aghdashloo as Salvatore's wife Nadia Maroni; Deirdre O’Connell as Oz's ailing mother, Francis Cobb; Carmen Ejogo as a love interest for Oz, Eve Karlo; and Theo Rossi as Dr. Julian Rush.

Showrunner Lauren LeFranc, who also executive produces The Penguin with The Batman director Matt Reeves and the film's producer Dylan Clark, previously told Entertainment Weekly that the series will bridge the gap between the events of the first movie and The Batman Part II. "We’re going almost directly into the second film Matt has planned," she said.
