What Color Was Rachel’s ‘Friends’ Dress? Aniston Answers

Rachel Green’s wardrobe was one for the books, full of plaid, miniskirts and a lot of denim. But the most beloved Rachel Green dress has been in the headlines, with fans debating the true color of the dress.

The dress appears in season 3 episode 2, “The One Where No One’s Ready,” as Ross tries to wrangle up the gang to get them ready for his black-tie event. After debating between outfits and refusing to attend the event, Rachel eventually puts on the dress.

But as the 30th anniversary of Friends rolled around, fans have been questioning the color of the dress, as many have seen it as green and as blue. Due to varying TV resolutions, fans have found it hard to pinpoint the dress's true color.

HD resolution shows the dress as mint green, which is how many remember it. But now that Friends is streaming on Max in 4K resolution, the dress appears to be a light blue color. So, what is the true color?

What the ‘Friends’ star say

Following the great debate on social media, Jennifer Aniston herself shared the truth about the dress’ true color. Aniston reposted the photo from Max, setting the record straight on the dress.

“For the record, the dress was mint green,” Aniston wrote on her Instagram stories.

But if 4K is meant to offer clearer, sharper images, why does it show the dress in a different color? And why should we be viewing our favorite shows and movies in this new resolution if it is changing the aesthetic and look of them?

Just because 4K is becoming the new HD as technology continues to improve, that doesn’t mean we want to see the look of 80s and 90s works change. But as for now, we will have to settle for seeing a bit of a difference in TV programs like Friends.

Why does the dress appear to be green and blue?

It seems to be a reincarnation of the 2015 “The Dress” debate, where nobody was able to decide whether it was black and blue or white and gold. After the streaming platform Max posted a side-by-side photo of Rachel in the dress, showing off both colors, fans have been wanting to know the truth.

Max wrote “As if @jenniferaniston could be any more perfect. Always there for you. Celebrate 30 years of #Friends now streaming in 4K on Max. #Friends30.” One user commented, “Ok what’s the real color of that dress? ??,” while another wrote, “Rachel not so Green.”

The series originally aired in HD, which has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. In recent years, Max began offering TV and movie options in 4K, providing a sharper resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.  4K offers a sharper picture quality and is often preferred by film buffs or collectors.

Rachel had an unforgettable fashion sense

Rachel made the square-neck ‘Friends’ green dress with a high slit one of the most memorable looks in the series.  It had fans wanting to dress like the fashionista and it certainly impressed Ross too.

Aniston’s character went on to influence fashion and style for women of the ‘90s and today. She has been responsible for the go-to haircut known as “The Rachel,” as well as many of the most popular ‘90s looks. Luckily for us, we can go back and view Rachel’s most iconic looks from the series whenever we want.

Friends is available for streaming on Max.
