Conservatives find a safe space on 'Grown-ish'
On Grown-ish, they tackled a kind of discrimination that doesn’t generally capture public attention: discrimination against conservatives. One main focus was how easy it can be to label people before hearing what they have to say.
At a party preparing for a protest and talking about safe spaces, Ana (Francia Raisa) admitted that she’s a conservative, which took Aaron (Trevor Jackson) by complete surprise, and his reaction was anything but welcoming. In fact, he told her that her slogan should be, “Get the hell out of here.”
After Aaron conceded that Ana may not be an idiot but said she believes in idiotic policies, Ana replied, “OK. And see? This right here is exactly why I need a safe space, ‘cause for some reason conservatives are the only group that it’s OK to openly hate on.”
After an all too common scene — a fight between rival protests — Zoey (Yara Shahidi) was quick to point the finger at Ana for causing it. But after listening to Ana, Zoey realized that she and Ana had a lot more in common than she thought. After all, Ana may be a Republican, but she also stands up for gay rights and climate change.
In the end, Luca broke it all down in a way both conservatives and liberals can agree on.
“All a safe space is is a bunch of people sitting around agreeing with each other,” he said. “People need to get comfortable being uncomfortable.”
Grown-ish airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on Freeform.
