Controversy surrounds the crowning of 'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars' champion

A new queen was crowned on the season finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, but not without some controversy among fans. The four finalists were BeBe Zahara Benet, Kennedy Davenport, Shangela, and Trixie Mattel. It was up to previously eliminated contestants to narrow the field to two, and they chose Trixie and Kennedy. The pair had a lip sync battle to Miley Cyrus’s hit “Wrecking Ball,” and RuPaul chose the winner.

RuPaul announced the winner in dramatic fashion, saying, “Ladies, I have made my decision. The queen who has earned her spot in the Drag Race Hall of Fame, the champion of All Stars 3 is … Trixie Mattel.”

But this came with its fair share of controversy. Many fans thought Shangela should have been in the top two if not the outright winner.

Though some fans may be disappointed by the outcome, Trixie was grateful for the honor.

“I know you guys are looking for someone who can carry a legacy,” Trixie said. “As an all star I feel like I’ve been carrying that legacy since I left the first time, so this means a lot. Thank you very much.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on VH1.
