Country Music Legend Coming Aboard New Ryan Murphy Cruise Ship Medical Drama

Ryan Murphy, co-creator of 9-1-1, is back with another drama that you don’t want to miss! While we don’t know all the Doctor Odyssey guest stars coming aboard the cruise ship procedural, we do know one big name joining the cast — Shania Twain!

Doctor Odyssey follows a doctor, played by Joshua Jackson, working on a cruise ship. The trailer promises it’s not all relaxation on board the luxury ship. There’s plenty of drama, too. Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, and Don Johnson round out the cast.
“Max (Jackson) is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the staff works hard and plays harder,” the official synopsis for the ABC medical drama explains. “It’s all-hands-on-deck as Max and his small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore.”

In a new trailer, Max is seen sizing up the ship before walking on The Odyssey. Robert Massey (Johnson), tells Max, “This ship is heaven. Our mission is to preserve the dream. And that’s why you’re here. Keep these dreamers safe.”
No pressure. Max confidently says, “I’m in.” The teaser shows passengers suffering various medical emergencies and a moment when the ship travels through some very stormy seas.
Johnson’s character notes, “It’s not a question of when you encounter waves, but what you do when they come up.” It looks like Jackson’s character will be put to the test. “Keep breathing,” Max says to a man who’s been rescued from the water and pulled into a lifeboat.
In a May 2024 interview with TVLine at ABC’s Upfront, Jackson shared just a glimpse of what viewers can expect with Doctor Odyssey. “It’s Ryan Murphy at his outrageous, over-the-top best. The word that [Murphy] first used with me was ‘sparkle,’ that everything should have a sparkle in your eye,” the actor explained. “The scripts are written with a lot of joy, and they’re very funny and they move very fast… and I think it’s going to be our job as a cast to remember that this is supposed to be an entertaining and enjoyable ride every week.”
This is Ryan’s second show for ABC after 9-1-1.
Who are the Doctor Odyssey guest stars?
The teaser trailer is definitely creating waves, with a blink-and-you-might-miss-it moment that shows Twain looking very glam on the dance floor with Johnson.
The official Doctor Odyssey Instagram account shared a photo of Twain, with the caption: “This luxury cruise liner is an oasis for legendary guests. We can’t wait to see you on The Odyssey, @shaniatwain! #DoctorOdyssey.”
Twain’s role is unknown at this time, but fans are looking forward to seeing her aboard The Odyssey cruise ship. One fan noted, “I can’t wait to see all of the guest stars! ?? #loveboatvibes.”
Doctor Odyssey premieres Thursday, September 26 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
Each episode will be available to stream on Hulu after it airs.
