James Gunn’s Creature Commandos, the first animated series from the new DC Studios leadership, has set its official release date. The series will launch the new era of the DC Universe. James Gunn’s Creature Commandos release date for MAX announced by DC

The animated series Creature Commandos, created by James Gunn, will premiere on MAX on Thursday, December 5, 2024. Avoiding the typical binge-release format, episodes will be released weekly every Thursday, with the seven-episode season concluding on January 16, 2025.

James Gunn, who now leads DC Studios with Peter Safran, writes and executive produces the series. It follows a secret team of monsters recruited for high-risk missions too dangerous for humans.

The voice cast includes Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Anya Chalotra, Zoe Chao, Frank Grillo, Sean Gunn, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Indira Varma, and Viola Davis. Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller, a character she has played in several DC projects. This unique approach allows characters and actors to transition between animation, live-action, and video games. It showcases the interconnected nature of Gunn’s vision for DC.

Creature Commandos is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, with additional executive producers Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register, and Rick Morales serving as the supervising producer.

This new animated series will pave the way for upcoming DC projects. Gunn will release his Superman film on July 11, 2025. Craig Gillespie will direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is set to release on June 26, 2026. As the first entry in the DC Universe, Creature Commandos aims to redefine how the studio approaches superhero storytelling in both films and television.
