The Crow 1994 Director Gloats Over Remake Bombing at Box Office

The Crow remake isn’t doing so well at the box office. That’s not usually a cause for celebration, unless you’re Alex Proyas.

The director of the original 1994 film took to social media to slam the new one. “Wow. The reviews are brutal,” wrote Proyas in a post on Facebook. “I thought the remake was a cynical cash-grab. Not much cash to grab it seems.”

Proyas also posted a meme reading, “Marked safe from seeing Crow 2024 today.” Later he wrote, “It’s a bit like flogging a dead horse now so I think I’ll stop after this… until another funny one comes along!”

The Crow (2024) took home just $4.6 million during its opening last weekend, against a reported budget of $50 million. That's despite The Crow star Bill Skarsg?rd getting naked and jumping in a tank of oil.

Reviews weren’t much kinder, with critics giving it a total of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. So, why the vitriol from Proyas?

He was against the remake from the start, objecting to revisiting a film in which an actor died. That was Brandon Lee, who was struck by a live round during filming.

In March following the first trailer, Proyas wrote: “I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmaker’s work. And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film….Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.”
