'The Crown' Surprisingly Recreated One of Prince Harry’s Most Controversial Moments & We Have So Many Questions

While Prince Harry has garnered millions of fans over the years, there’s one moment that even a die-hard fan can’t excuse: when he infamously wore a Nazi costume to a party in 2008. And though the royal has since apologized for the tone-deaf choice, and given his side of the story in Spare, we can’t deny that it happened in the first place.

And while it may be a memory Harry tries to bury, Netflix’s The Crown recreated the incident during the second part of season 6, per Daily Mail. According to the outlet, the story begins with teenage Harry (played by Luther Ford), Prince William (Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) as they shop for costumes for a “native and colonial” theme party.

“Germany had an empire, didn’t they? What about this?” Harry says, reaching for a Nazi costume and trying it on.

Seeing the outfit, Middleton is clearly hesitant. “I don’t know, maybe cover the swastika?” she suggests. “Oh, come on,” William quips. “Wearing the outfit doesn’t make him a Nazi. Isn’t that the joke?”

A few scenes later, the three make it to the party – Harry in the Nazi costume and William dressed as a lion.

The next day, just like in real life, Harry’s tone-deaf costume makes it to the front page of newspapers across the country. Per Daily Mail, William exclaims “s—” when he sees it while King Charles (Dominic West) angrily throws the paper in the trash.

Later on, when Harry and William are more aware of the repercussions, the two have a massive fight over who’s to blame. “You were all for the uniform, egging me on,” Harry told his older brother. “Suddenly you’re Mr. Morality. Stabbing me in the back… How many faces does this man have?”

“I’m not sure I like who you’re turning into,” William responds. “Not sure I like who you’ve been,” Harry then adds.

Looking back at Harry’s portrayal of the incident in his memoir, it seems like there are plenty of things the series got right. “I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought,” Harry wrote in Spare. According to the royal, he then asked the couple to choose between two outfits: a pilot or a Nazi. “‘Nazi uniform,’ they said,” Harry wrote.

“They both howled,” Harry recalled as he tried on the costume for them for the first time. “‘Worse than Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous!’ Which, again, was the point.”

And while The Crown and the rest of the world will never approve of Harry’s baffling choice, it’s interesting to see that Harry isn’t the only one who thinks the decision didn’t stem only from him. Perhaps he had some involvement in the new season after all?
