‘Cruel Intentions’ and Other High-Profile Movie Adaptation Pilots Dropped From TV
For NBC, Cruel Intentions is deader than Sebastian Valmont. The peacock network passed on a reboot-slash-sequel that catches up with Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Kathryn as she vies for control of the family business and for the soul of her step-brother’s son, Bash Casey. Yes, Bash. Casey.
NBC blamed the sudden disinterest on their full midseason roster, so the show’s creators are shopping it to other networks. If no one picks it up, Cruel Intentions will join these other high profile movie adaptations that didn’t quite make it on the small screen.
Beverly Hills Cop
Eddie Murphy just can’t quit Axl Foley. A fourth movie installment may still be… fourth-coming, but back in 2013, they almost brought Axl to CBS. The show followed his son Aaron, played by Brandon T. Jackson, Murphy returned as Axl, and Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld helmed the pilot, but it never made it to air. That’s a real banana in the tailpipe.
Driving Miss Daisy
Three years after the movie took the Best Picture Academy Award, an executive probably said, “Hey, what if this was a TV show?!” Good idea, executive! Unfortunately, Joan Plowright and Robert Guillaume couldn’t quite capture the magic of the original. The pilot aired once on CBS and then disappeared forever.
Legally Blonde
When you’re a ditzy law student, the blonde jokes seem limitless! Unless you’re the heartless network exec who cancelled this adaptation. In 2003, there were nearly dueling Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon in the big screen’s Red, White and Blonde, and Jennifer Hall in this D.O.A. TV pilot. I guess the world just wasn’t ready for that much blonde.
