Rather than pursuing a love triangle on Doctor Odyssey, the show started to lean into a throuple angle — Max (Joshua Jackson), Avery (Philippa Soo), and Tristan (Sean Teale) — with plenty of chemistry to go around. Now the show’s throwing a wrench into the works — Avery discovers she’s pregnant, but who’s the baby daddy?

Who’s Avery Morgan’s Baby’s Father on Doctor Odyssey?
In Season 1, Episode 6, titled “I Always Cry at Weddings,” the characters engaged in a threesome. In Episode 7, titled, “Oh, Daddy,” the synopsis explained, “It’s Gay Week on The Odyssey. As Max, Avery, and Tristan navigate their relationships, Capt. Massey’s brother arrives with an unexpected guest.”
Max decides he doesn’t want to share a partner, however, saying that he ultimately wants to be with one person and have a family. Tristan tells Avery he’s in love with her and doesn’t want to share her with another person. The episode ends with the trio delivering a baby.
The promo for Doctor Odyssey Episode 8, titled “Quackers,” teases “A secret is born,” then shows a positive pregnancy test. Avery says, “I’m pregnant.” She’s asked, “Who is the father?” and summons both Max and Tristan, telling them, “I need to talk to both of you.” Will we get any answers?
The episode synopsis explains: “It’s Quackers Week, and the ship is bustling with guests obsessed with a quirky trend taking over the cruising industry: rubber duckies. As the voyage unfolds, Avery receives unexpected news.”
We can only imagine that, given that Episode 8 is the fall finale, we may not get an answer to this question or see how it plays out until the show returns on March 6.
There are a lot of theories flying, naturally, with some fans expressing they hope it’s Max’s baby, given his desire to have children.
There’s one theory that seems more plausible, however: Avery actually isn’t pregnant. There’s always the possibility for a test to be wrong. One fan noted in the promo video comments, “It’s probably a false positive since it’s the first season and shows love that plot line.”
In a Reddit discussion about the pregnancy storyline, one fan supported the theory, saying, “Kind of hoping it’s a false positive.”
Another person joked, “It’s going to be like that episode of 30 Rock where Liz ate the chips made with bull semen that resulted in the false positive… except Max will relate it back to having the worst Covid ever or teaching in Africa.”
Other fans noted that jumping to a pregnancy so early in the first season is unlikely. “It would be insane to have a pregnancy storyline in the first season,” one noted. “I have no clue where it’ll actually go but I think it’ll be Avery’s eye opener for which of the men she wants romantically (obviously going to be Max, too predictable) since I truly believe they won’t touch the whole potential throuple storyline again (I’d love to be wrong).”
Another noted, “I feel like she isn’t actually pregnant and it’s an error from the test, which is pretty common… or it’s like a phantom pregnancy.”
