Daisy Ridley, Who Should Absolutely Be the Next Lara Croft, Confirms ‘Tomb Raider’ Talks
The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to talk to Daisy Ridley at the Empire Awards in London on Sunday. It was there that the Star Wars star confirmed that she’s in talks to take on the role of Lara Croft in the planned reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise. Ridley said she hasn’t been offered the part but is definitely interested. She told the Reporter, “I’m waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it.’” Ridley would make a lot of sense to take on the role but only if you know where the franchise has gone in recent years.
The early incarnation of Lara Croft featured a comically proportioned woman wearing skimpy clothing in a game, and while some women found her empowering, the game felt like it was designed by men for men. That’s what inspired the Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies … unless you think they included a long shower scene just for fans of hygiene.
When the games were rebooted in 2013, they made changes to the Lara Croft character. She was now younger and more sensibly dressed for an adventurer. Our new Croft is more realized as a person, and while there are certainly things to question regarding decisions made by its producers, the consensus is that the new Tomb Raider games are more feminist in nature.
Ridley looks like the new Lara and already has experience portraying a butt-kicking feminist protagonist. Her character, Rey, in Star Wars eschewed revealing clothing and proved herself as capable in a fight as anyone. If they want to make Lara Croft as fully realized as Rey, you might as well … get Rey.
