Dakota Johnson explains what happened to her famous tooth gap: 'I'm really sad about it too'
Dakota Johnson has confirmed that her tooth gap is gone.
Fans noticed that the actress’s smile was different at a screening of The Peanut Butter Falcon earlier this month — with some taking to social media to mourn. So during an appearance on Tuesday’s Tonight Show , she addressed the dental drama, explaining that it wasn’t a planned change — and she’s upset about it too.
"I had a permanent retainer since I was 13 and it was just glued to the back of my teeth," the Fifty Shades of Grey star, now 29, revealed. "I was having a lot of neck problems recently so my orthodontist decided it would be a good idea to take it off and see if my jaw expanded.
While “it helped” with the pain, she continued, “my gap closed by itself and I’m really sad about it too.”
After some sill back and forth with Jimmy Fallon about teeth, she got serious. “Anyway, hold on, this is really important: I'm sad about my gap tooth too so I'd really appreciate some privacy in this time.”
Johnson went on to say that without the gap, she has “to deal with a whole new world of problems getting food stuck in my tooth. Before it would just slide right through."
That’s true. Johnson once teamed up with Vanity Fair to figure out how many things she can fit in her gap — “because that’s my only skill.” She used a toothpick, credit card, paperclip and $1100 as her dad, Don Johnson, looked on.
While the gap is gone, Johnson told Fallon that it may only be a temporary situation. She said that with the help of a new retainer, “It’s going to come back,” adding, “The world of dentistry is so advanced.”
When that happens, there will no longer be a need for fan tributes to Johnson’s “gone but not forgotten” gap.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the only thing Johnson is making headlines over. After it was reported in June that she split from Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in June, the pair were together in the Hamptons over the weekend showing some “serious PDA.”
Martin also reportedly attended the premiere of Peanut Butter Falcon, sitting alongside her parents (mom is Melanie Griffith) during the screening.
