Whiplash, the Oscar-winning psychological drama marking the breakout project of writer-director Damien Chazelle, is coming back to theaters nationwide in celebration of its 10th anniversary, Sony Pictures Classics announced today.

Inspired by Chazelle’s 2013 short of the same name, Whiplash follows Andrew Neyman (Teller), an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite east coast music conservatory. Terence Fletcher (Simmons), an instructor known equally for his teaching talents and his terrifying methods, discovers Andrew and transfers him into his band. But Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection soon spirals into obsession, as his ruthless teacher continues to push him to the brink of both his ability and his sanity.
After premiering in 2014 as the opening night film at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize for drama and the Audience Award, Whiplash broke out as one of the most-discussed films of its year, scoring five Academy Award nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Chazelle and Best Picture, with additional wins for Film Editing and Sound Mixing.
Now regarded as one of the best movies of the 2010s, the pic earlier this year was voted the top Sundance film of all time in a survey of over 500 filmmakers, critics, and industry professionals, conducted by the Sundance Institute for the festival’s 40th anniversary.
Hailing from Blumhouse, Right of Way Films, and Bold Films, Whiplash was produced by Jason Blum, Helen Estabrook, Michel Litvak and David Lancaster. Exec producers included Jason Reitman, Gary Michael Walters, and Couper Samuelson and Jeanette Volturno of Blumhouse.
Since Whiplash, Chazelle has gone on to make films including musical La La Land (with which be became the youngest Best Director Oscar winner), the Neil Armstrong drama First Man reteaming him with La La Land lead Ryan Gosling, and the manic Old Hollywood epic Babylon. While the latter was a commercial failure that Chazelle admitted made him a bit concerned about his future prospects, he announced his next feature for Paramount — an as-yet-untitled original, reportedly set in a prison — at CinemaCon earlier this year.
Additionally, as we were first to report, Chazelle is set to produce Heart of the Beast, a new military actioner that David Ayer will direct for the same studio.
