After a half-decade hiatus, Wolf Parade is getting back together. But there’s much more to get excited over than a chance to sing along to “Shine a Light” when the band hits the road next month. Co-frontman Dan Boeckner stopped by the Alt In Our Stars podcast to chat about Wolf Parade, his new band Operators, and how he endured years of dead-end jobs to forge a full-time life in music.

The Wolf Parade reunion begins May 17 with a five-show residency at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. Boeckner says the band plans to “pepper the set with new stuff,” some of which has already been recorded. “If I was gonna guess when new stuff is coming out I would say it’s definitely probably gonna be around these Bowery Shows. That would make the most sense.”

Ever try to balance multiple musical projects at the same time? Boeckner’s surely got some advice for you. “Name a shit job, I’ve probably worked it,” says the former telemarketer, drywall remover and butcher’s department cleaner. “When I think I might like some time off, I just remember when I was working those jobs; all I wanted was a week to write songs. Or I set the bar really low — I’d just like one day to not do anything but work on music.”
