Dan Levy shares correct pronunciation of his name during Emmys opening monologue
Dan Levy wants people to know exactly who he is — and how to say his name.
While hosting the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 15 alongside his father, Eugene Levy, Dan Levy cracked a joke about how to pronounce their last name.
“We’re very, very excited to be here tonight. I think most of you know we are not standup comedians,” Eugene Levy said in the beginning of their monologue.
“No. In fact, I wouldn’t even really call us hosts. We’re more like, what, actors acting like hosts, which is a huge gamble for us. But if it goes well tonight, my name is pronounced ‘leh-vee,’ not ‘lee-vee,’” Dan Levy joked.
“And if things go south, my name is pronounced ‘Martin Short,’” his father added, prompting laughter from the audience.
The correct pronunciation of the family name has come up before.
In April 2021, Dan Levy shared a clip from “Jeopardy!” when he was the answer to a clue. The contestant mispronounced his name and guest host Anderson Cooper gave her credit for the answer while also sharing the right way to say “Levy.”
@andersoncooper with that gentle last name correction...,” Levy wrote on X.

Mispronounced name or not, Levy is an Emmy favorite.
He has won an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his role as David Rose on “Schitt’s Creek.” Eugene Levy has also won an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a comedy for his part as Johnny Rose in the series, which ran for six seasons between 2015 and 2020.
