'Dance Moms' Kelly Hyland Reveals Unfortunate Health Update
Kelly Hyland
Dance Moms alum Kelly Hyland is opening up about a shocking health battle she's found herself in the middle of in a new interview with E! News.
It had been less than a year since she'd received a clean bill of health during her regularly schedule mammogram when the reality star, 53, discovered a lump in her breast this past March, leading to a diagnosis of invasive carcinoma grade 3.
Things started to feel weird for the mother of three when other people started complimenting her "significant weight loss" and asked for her "dieting hacks," but Kelly hadn't made any changes to her diet or lifestyle to trigger her to slim down, so, after finding the lump, she quickly got herself in for another mammogram, confirming the presence of a mass, which a biopsy confirmed was not only malignant but very fast-growing.
"I went from clean results to a malignant mass in eight months," she emphasized. "I was shocked that it had grown that quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face."
With Kelly living in Florida and her three children, Brooke, 26, and Paige, 23, and son Josh, 24, still living in Pittsburgh, she pulled them together on a conference call for "a very hard conversation"—which, of course, she would have preferred to have had in person—to ensure everyone got the same information at the same time.
Paige told the publication she knew "something was off" the moment Kelly called them all together, feeling a "whirlwind of emotions" as she questioned "why this would happen to someone as amazing as [her] mother."
It called back to their grandmother, who passed of cancer in 2019, painting the picture of a "long road we had ahead." The sisters remembered how difficult it was to "watched [their] Nana battle cancer for years," and "hated [having] to watch another important person...go through it," though Josh believes his mother's battle will be successful thanks to catching it in the first stage. "I know my mom is strong enough to get through this," he said.
Accepting help is difficult, especially as the former dance mom is "used to being the one taking care of people, not the one being taken care of," but she has quite the crew supporting her, including her former costars, whom she continued to record her podcasts with to keep her life "as normal as possible"—though treatment sometimes necessitates adjustments to their schedule, which all are "extremely supportive [of]."
"I'm very lucky to have such great friends and a flexible job that allows me to keep some normalcy during all of this," she said.
Kelly is currently on round two of six chemotherapy treatments, after which she'll undergo surgery, radiation, and 11 more chemo treatments.
