Dancing With the Stars is ABC’s reality TV dance competition series based on the United Kingdom’s Strictly Come Dancing. The series, which premiered in 2005, pairs celebrities with professional dancers. The couples then compete against each other for judges’ points and audience votes. The pair with the lowest combined judges’ points and audience votes is eliminated each week until only one champion remains. That couple is declared the winner and receives the coveted Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
Season 32 marked the first season without longtime judge Len Goodman, who retired in 2022 and passed away just five months later. The judging panel consisted of Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough, while Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough served as hosts. Artem Chigvintsev, Daniella Karagach, Emma Slater, Gleb Savchenko, Jenna Johnson, Pasha Pashkov, Peta Murgatroyd, Rylee Arnold, and Val Chmerkovskiy, among others, all served as pros.
The show was officially renewed by ABC for its 33rd season in May 2024. Read on for everything we know about the Season 33 cast, including which pros, judges, and hosts are returning.
Who’s coming back for Dancing With the Stars Season 33?
Who’s coming back for Dancing With the Stars Season 33? On May 10, our sister site Variety confirmed that DWTS had been renewed for Season 33. The outlet also reported that all three Season 32 judges would be returning, including original judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, as well as former pro-turned-judge Derek Hough. Alfonso Ribeiro and Julianne Hough will also be returning as hosts.
Derek celebrated the news on Instagram, writing alongside the show’s announcement: “Let the competition begin ????.” Tonioli previously confirmed his return in an April 2024 interview with The Sun.
“I’m still doing the American one and I’m very passionate about it,” he said of the Strictly Come Dancing spin-off, noting that his new Britain’s Got Talent gig won’t affect his role on the show. Julianne’s return was also spoiled, as her new talent agency confirmed her involvement with Deadline back in March.
In case we needed further confirmation, on August 13th, People went ahead and gave us that, reporting that the entire judging lineup, alongside co-hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro would indeed be returning for Season 33 of Dancing With the Stars.
As for which pros will be returning, we unfortunately won’t find out until the stars are announced just before the September 2024 premiere. The same goes for the pros themselves, who allegedly don’t get asked back until the last week of August, as Gleb Savchenko revealed to The Sun. “We just sit and wait for the calls to be picked up, and hopefully, I’m back as a pro,” he told the outlet. The pro dancer also teased that the show might be ushering in a new generation of dancers in the near future. “A friend of mine just said it to me yesterday, ‘The show will definitely, at some point, get a facelift,'” he said, adding: “And facelift, meaning it has to be updated with maybe dancers or whatever. But I’ll tell you one thing, even though I’m 40 years old, I don’t look like I’m 40.”
So far, none of the Season 33 pros have indicated that they are leaving the show, but it isn’t always their decision. Some past pros have departed DWTS after they weren’t asked back by ABC, including Lacey Schwimmer and Mirrorball-winner Sharna Burgess. With the Olympics having just finished, the next season is expected to add at least one Olympian, but it is still unknown what other surprises the show could have in store when it comes to celebrity contestants.
