Daniel Craig says he's been 'gently' trying to make the James Bond movies appeal more to women

James Bond is becoming more socially aware.

Daniel Craig opened up to PEOPLE about how the iconic character will change in the wake of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, saying he’s moving the international spy away from his womanizing reputation.

“I’ve been trying to do that gently for the past four movies and I’ll continue to do that,” Craig said at the Opportunity Network’s annual gala in New York City on Monday, where he was joined by his wife Rachel Weisz. The pair wed in 2011, just six months after they began dating.

Throughout the films, Bond has been known for two things: saving the world and seducing women. But the actor, 50, hinted that the upcoming Bond movie might show a new side to the spy.

“We’re right in the middle of doing it,” he said.

Craig confirmed he was returning to play the iconic spy for the fifth time earlier this year following months of speculation that he was leaving the franchise.

But before he announced his highly-anticipated return, a swell of celebrities expressed their interest in seeing a woman as the titular character.

In 2016, Priyanka Chopra expressed her interest in taking on the role. When asked if she’d want to play a Bond girl, she replied, “I get that all the time. But f— that – I wanna be Bond.”

The next untitled Bond film is set for release on November 8, 2019.
