Daniel Radcliffe recalls being 'so intimidated' by “Harry Potter” costar Alan Rickman before they bonded

"How can you not be by that voice?" Radcliffe said of his late friend and castmate.

One of the greatest tricks of the Harry Potter series is convincing readers and viewers that the ornery Hogwarts potions master Severus Snape is a terrifying villain, when really he's just a good guy with a bad attitude. In a new interview with Happy Sad Confused, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe admitted that even he was afraid of Snape actor Alan Rickman on the first few movies.

"I was so intimidated by Alan Rickman. How can you not be by that voice?" Radcliffe said of his late friend and castmate, who died in 2016. "Even hearing that voice, you forget quite how low it was until it echoes through you. I was so intimidated by him for the first three movies. I was terrified by him and was like, 'This guy hates me.' Somewhere along the lines he saw that I really wanted to do this and work at it."

This was Radcliffe's response to Happy Sad Confused host Josh Horowitz playing a segment of a 2015 interview with Rickman in which the actor said that he felt "huge pride" seeing Radcliffe perform on Broadway in the musical revival How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and complimented his work ethic as a child star. "As much as I was doing it for seven weeks," Rickman said, "they were doing it for 52 weeks."

Radcliffe is currently starring in the Broadway revival of another musical, Merrily We Roll Along, and conducted the HSC interview alongside his costars Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez. He was clearly moved by the Rickman footage.

"He saw every piece of stage work I did when he was alive," Radcliffe said. "He would take me out afterwards and we would talk about it. He was one of the first people to say like, 'You should look at voice coaching and investigate all this stuff.' I am so lucky. To hear him say that is really lovely. Thank you for showing me that."

Alas, not all of Radcliffe's relationships with his Harry Potter elders have fared as well over the years. Author J.K. Rowling recently suggested she would not forgive Radcliffe and other costars for opposing her attacks on transgender people.
