Dave Grohl’s surprising Instagram message on Tuesday, Sept. 10 came seemingly out of the blue for his fans. He revealed that he had a child outside of his marriage to Jordyn Blum, his wife of 21 years. While it was news that was hard to process for his longtime followers, it appears that the Foo Fighters frontman was making legal moves behind the scenes.

The 55-year-old musician retained a divorce lawyer ahead of his announcement, according to People. He nor his wife have made any statements after his initial post, but Grohl indicated that there are a lot of hurt feelings in his family, which includes daughters, Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10.
“I’ve recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage,” Grohl wrote. “I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We’re grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.” Violet and Harper, who were both active on Instagram, took down their accounts in the wake of the news going public, per Page Six.
Grohl’s history with infidelity is sadly not a recent development. He revealed to The Guardian in 2007 that his first marriage to Jennifer Youngblood ended because of his cheating ways, and ex-girlfriend, Tina Basich, chronicled his affairs in her 2003 book, Pretty Good for a Girl: The Autobiography of a Snowboarding Pioneer. “I don’t know how anyone in his profession can have a normal relationship with a girlfriend…or two, as it turned out. I found out secondhand, through the grapevine, when it seemed like everyone else in the world knew about it but me,” she wrote.
While his family is likely devastated, the former Nirvana drummer is receiving praise from crisis management experts for getting straight to the point with his message. “He likely knew that the media and the algorithm was going to be focused on the presidential debate,” crisis communications strategist and TikTok star Molly McPherson told The New York Times. She noted that “the best move for any celebrity is just to own the situation themselves, acknowledge it and move on because people on social media have short memories.”
So far, no one has correctly identified Grohl’s affair partner and mother to his youngest daughter, but internet sleuths are probably working overtime to make that discovery. That’s when Grohl will face another wave of publicity, which will be a difficult test for his family yet again.
