David Spade says ex Heather Locklear is 'having a tough situation' following arrests
David Spade reached out to his ex-girlfriend Heather Locklear during what he calls her “tough situation.”
The comedian, who dated the Melrose Place star in 2006, said he has spoken to her in the wake of his sister-in-law Kate Spade’s death by suicide last month, and it comes at a time when Locklear’s struggles have put her in the public eye.
“She checked in on me with Katie and all that stuff,” Spade told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy on July 18. “A lot of people did. And it was really nice. Katie was a sweetheart, too, so Heather, I think, might have met her in the old days.”
Spade explained that he was sympathetic to his former love, who has publicly struggled over the years, including in the last few months. In February, Locklear was arrested after a domestic dispute with her boyfriend in which she allegedly assaulted an officer. She checked into rehab in March. In June, she was arrested again for battery against a police officer. She was hospitalized the following day after she reportedly threatened to kill herself.
“[Locklear] is having a tough situation. Whatever. We all do,” Spade said. “I mean, I have my down moments like everybody. … Everyone’s literally one inch away from having some trouble sometimes.”
Spade and Locklear reportedly ended their romance in September 2006, but the two stars have remained friends. The actress even guest-starred on his sitcom, Rules of Engagement, in 2007.
“I mean, I love her,” Spade said. “She was nice to go out with me, and I will always be indebted to her because she was so nice, so fun. And no apologies — went out with me, didn’t care, even though I’m sure she took some grief.”
Spade, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, has a reputation for dating some of Hollywood’s most beautiful women. Besides Locklear, he’s also been romantically linked to Kristy Swanson, Brittany Daniel, Naya Rivera, Pamela Anderson, and Carmen Electra (though Electra later denied they were an item).
Locklear met Spade when she hosted SNL in May 1994, when Spade was just a writer on the show.
“She was on SNL once, hosting, when I was a writer,” Spade said. “She goes, ‘I remember you.’ I go, ‘There’s not a chance.’ She remembered me, and I was some goofy writer, walking around — not getting any sketches on, of course. Just, like, mesmerized by her, growing up on her, loving her. Ran into her later and we were friendly, and then we started hanging out. But she’s always so chirpy and fun and hilarious. So I would just keep checking in on her now and then. I still do.”
