'A day to reflect and support': Tan France, Demi Lovato, more stars celebrate National Coming Out Day
Sunday marks National Coming Out Day, and while stars are waving their rainbow flags, they're also encouraging others to come out on their own terms.
Demi Lovato, who co-hosted the Facebook Watch event "Coming Out 2020" on Friday, came out publicly as bisexual in 2017, though the singer now reveals she had been expressing her sexuality through her music in years prior.
"There were times when I wrote songs about girls that my fans thought I wrote about guys," Lovato said, reflecting on her coming out journey. "I'm surprised that some of them didn't figure out that some of the songs were for certain people. I was sharing it with the world and yet I wasn't being completely obvious with what I was talking about. Music was my safe space."
Big names including Lovato, her "Coming Out 2020" co-host Tan France and more celebrated National Coming Out Day on Sunday, an annual day of awareness for the LGBTQ+ community that celebrates a person's coming out journey.
"Coming Out Day isn't necessarily meant to be the day you come out, unless you really, really want to. You do you," said "Queer Eye" fashion guru France. "It's more of a day to reflect and support the journey of others."
Prior to "Queer Eye," France had come out "in stages" to those close to him. But joining the reality show, the premise of which involved a contestant getting a life makeover from five gay men (hair guru Jonathan Van Ness has since come out as non-binary), meant he would be coming out globally.
"At the time, I didn't see it as brave, I was just so sick of not being myself," France said. "I just wanted to relieve myself of the burden of feeling so stifled by the secret."
"It's a relief when you're able to be truthful to the entire world," Lovato added.

The National Coming Out Day tributes didn't stop there. Actor Matt Bomer, who turns 43 on Sunday, asked fans to help celebrate his birthday by donating to the Trevor Project, an organization that focuses on suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ youth.
"Coming out isn't possible for everyone and for a variety of reasons, that might include personal safety, family rejection, job security and much more," Bomer said. "This National Coming Out Day, I want to remind you that you're never alone."

Country singer Kacey Musgraves wrote a message on social media to show support for members of the LGBTQ+ community who have not yet come out publicly.
"I pray whoever is reading this and isn't 'out' yet has a stable and welcoming environment at home but if you don't - please know you have a MASSIVE tribe across the globe waiting with open arms to love and accept you for exactly who you are," she wrote.
"In my home, we teach that love is love, and the importance of accepting everyone in all of their beautiful uniqueness!" Tyra Banks tweeted Sunday. "Happy #NationalComingOutDay to the LGBTQ+ community, we support you and cherish the vibrance you bring to the world!"
