The Dead Don’t Hurt Trailer Sets Release Date for Viggo Mortensen Western
Shout! Studios announced on Monday that The Dead Don’t Hurt, a Western film written, directed, and starring Viggo Mortensen, will release later this year in theaters.
The film is set to release on May 31, 2024, in theaters nationwide. Alongside Mortensen, the Western also stars Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread), Sally McLeod (House of the Dragon), Garret Dillahunt (Red Right Hand), Colin Morgan (Belfast, Merlin), Ray McKinnon (The Continental, Deadwood), W. Earl Brown (The Mandalorian), newcomer Atlas Green, and Danny Hutson (Children of Men).
The movie was written and will be directed by Mortensen, who made his directorial debut with 2020’s Falling.

What is The Dead Don’t Hurt about?
“The Dead Don’t Hurt is a story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) is a fiercely independent woman who embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Viggo Mortensen). After meeting Olsen in San Francisco, she agrees to travel with him to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada, where they start a life together. The outbreak of the civil war separates them when Olsen makes a fateful decision to fight for the Union.”
