Deadpool 3 release date, Wolverine return and everything we know so far
"Deadpool 3" — officially titled "Deadpool and Wolverine" — is shaping up to be one for the books. Not only is an iconic X-Men character making his MCU debut for the movie, but Disney's first R-rated superhero will be a part of the same cinematic universe as Spider-Man and other heroes. On top of that, the third Deadpool movie comes at a particularly dry spell for Marvel, with it being the MCU’s sole cinematic release slated for 2024.
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige previously confirmed that "Deadpool 3" is the only R-rated Marvel project in development at the House of Mouse. So fans can rest assured that Disney doesn't plan to muzzle the merc with a mouth. Case in point, recently the Motion Picture Association’s Classification and Rating Administration announced the film earned its R rating for “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references." While the previous two Deadpool movies were rated R, the third entry marks the first film in the X-Men franchise since Disney acquired the studio, which is being folded into the MCU.
With just a few short weeks to go before it arrives in theaters, our hype levels for "Deadpool and Wolverine" are through the roof. Below, we dive into everything you need to know about "Deadpool 3’s" cast, plot, release date, and trailer. Oh, and while you wait for "Deadpool 3," be sure to check out Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool Christmas movie.
Deadpool took a while to get off the ground, with Reynolds telling Jimmy Fallon that he'd been trying to get it made for 11 years. Of course, the infamous test footage leaked when Fox didn't seem to be doing anything to move things along, fans loved it, and here we are waiting for a third movie. Let's hope it fares better than "Deadpool 2" (which you can stream on Disney Plus, one of the best streaming services).
'Deadpool 3' release date
In its latest release date change, "Deadpool and Wolverine" will come out on July 26, 2024, a little over four months earlier than its previous release date of Nov. 8, 2024. In May, its runtime was revealed at 127 minutes, or 2 hours and 7 minutes, according to the AMC Theaters website. If true, this would make "Deadpool and Wolverine" the longest of any Deadpool movie to date, setting a new record for the franchise.
The Super Bowl 2024 live stream revealed the film's first teaser trailer, which you can check out below, as well as its official title: "Deadpool and Wolverine."
Ryan Reynolds announced the previous Deadpool 3 initial release date — Sept. 6, 2024 — in a video that revealed Hugh Jackman's return to Marvel movies as Wolverine. This release date was pushed back to November before later being moved up to May. That was ultimately pushed again to July due to delays from SAG-AFTRA strikes and WGA strikes last summer.
Disney has released a series of upcoming Marvel movie release dates, with some movies getting firm dates and some dates getting tied to Marvel movies. So you've got plenty of time to watch all the X-Men movies in order and most of the best Netflix shows, too.
"[Deadpool 3] will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now," Feige told Collider in 2021. "It will not be [filming] this year. Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor.
"We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life."
Filming initially began in May 2023 before being shut down in July by the writers' and actors' strikes in Hollywood. It then resumed in late November 2023 and wrapped in January 2024.
'Deadpool 3' trailer
On April 22, the official "Deadpool and Wolverine" trailer was released, giving us a few more glimpses of what's to come.
In the trailer, Deadpool approaches a rather drunk Wolverine in a bar, and asks him for help. As the trailer unfolds, it's revealed that Deadpool is asking for help to save his world, with the implication being that Wolverine was unsuccessful in saving his own. So it looks like the multiverse is still very much in play in the MCU.
A teaser trailer was released in February 2024, which shows a number of characters from earlier Deadpool films, including Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Colossus (Stefan Kapicic), and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). Things seem to be going pretty well until a visit from the Time Variance Authority (which we last saw in Loki) sends Deadpool on a universe-hopping adventure.
As of June 28, we got another short teaser that reveals more action scenes between Deadpool and Wolverine, along with a surprise reveal of one of Marvel's coolest villains. Yes, that's right, Marvel casually dropped the villain Sabretooth (played by Tyler Mane) in the teaser. Although we don't see much of him, we do know that his hatred for poor Wolverine is still there, and so they'll probably join together in an epic fight scene.
'Deadpool 3' cast and crew
Shawn Levy — who worked on "Free Guy" and "The Adam Project" with Ryan Reynolds — is directing "Deadpool 3," per a post from The Hollywood Reporter.
As noted above, Hugh Jackman will reprise the role of Wolverine. Here's the first look at Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Deadpool 3, note the yellow and blue wardrobe most familiar from the comics and animated series.
Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin were on board to write "Deadpool 3." If you're a "Bob's Burgers" fan, you might recognize their names as they've been writing for the show for years.
Then, previous "Deadpool" movie writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were brought into replace them.
When it comes to the rest of the cast, Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as Wade Wilson/ Deadpool, and now that Vanessa isn't dead anymore, we'll see the two living out their relationship goals — meaning that Morena Baccarin will also be back.
But they're far from the only familiar faces returning for the threequel. As we saw in the first trailer, also reprising their roles from the first two "Deadpool" films are Stefan Kapi?i? (Colossus), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic), Shioli Kutsuna (Yukio), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al), Karen Soni (Dopinder), and Rob Delaney (Peter).
"Succesion's" Matthew Macfadyen is also joining the crew as a new Time Variance Authority (TVA) agent called Paradox, which adds major ties between "Deadpool 3" and "Loki" season 2. The Hollywood Reporter previously broke the news that Jennifer Garner will reprise the role of Elektra for the film. This version of the character was first seen in 20th Century Fox’s "Daredevil" and the solo "Elektra" movie. We also know from a short teaser released by Marvel is that Tyler Mane is back as Sabretooth (from the "X-Men" universe).
'Deadpool 3' villain rumors
Previous rumors hinted that Jim Carrey was in consideration to play the villain in Deadpool 3, possibly as Madcap, a character that breaks the fourth wall as much as Wade Wilson himself. But that turned out not to be the case.
In February 2024, it was announced that Emma Corrin of "The Crown" fame had signed on to the project, though details were scarce other than they will play the villain. A U.S. copyright filing spotted by Comicbook.com suggests she could play Charles Xavier's twin sister Cassandra Nova. In the trailer, eagle-eyed fans spotted the back of a bald person's head that didn't appear to be Charles Xavier, which also suggests Corrin's possible role.
Debuting in 2001's New X-Men #114, Cassandra has similar telekinetic and telepathic powers to her twin brother and is hellbent on eradicating what she refers to as "the mutant menance." She infamously commanded an army of evolved mutant-hunting machines, the Sentinels, to massacre 16 million mutants on their homeland of Genosha. It's later revealed that she is what's called a mummudrai, a formless, parasitic lifeform of living energy that copied Xavier's DNA to make her own body.
Joining Cassandra Nova is the feisty villain Sabretooth, who relishes in causing pain to those he hates most. Due to his constant rage, he's feared by many characters in the MCU, but it seems like one of his biggest enemies — Wolverine — isn't phased. They're bound to have a huge fight scene in the upcoming movie.
