Decluttering guru Marie Kondo's advice about tossing out books inspires funny Twitter responses
Marie Kondo and her buzzy new Netflix show, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo, are getting bad reviews from book lovers.
The unscripted show, which debuted Jan. 1, features Kondo helping people who want to put all their stuff in order and make their lives more harmonious. She uses the KonMari Method that she introduced in her 2014 book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, in which people determined which belongings to rid themselves of by throwing out anything that doesn’t “spark joy.”
(In case you’re wondering, Kondo suggested just last month that people also toss her book after they’ve used it.)
As you can imagine, none of this sat well with avid readers. They wisely noted that books are works of art, not just another replaceable object.
Thank you all for your incredible response to my uprising against Konmari The notion that books should spark joy is a LUDICROUS one. I have said it a hundred times: Literature does not exist only to comfort and placate us. It should disturb + perturb us. Life is disturbing.

Up to this point I was VERY cool with her whole thing. But in my view you can declutter everything except books and art and plants.

In fact, some of the backlash inspired another backlash from people who thought the book supporters were being too dramatic.
So sad to learn that Marie Kondo is breaking into people’s houses and throwing out all their books
(I assume this is what is happening based on some reactions on twitter)

I have not watched the Marie Kondo show, but based on what I’m seeing on Twitter, I feel I need to loudly and clearly declare: I am a librarian. I love books. I 100% stand behind the idea of getting rid of books. I have, in fact, THROWN AWAY BOOKS!

I cant believe Marie Kondo said to destroy all books and then broke into peoples’ houses individually and made them eat all their books and then when they tried to protest she said “don’t talk with your mouth full of books, bookmouth” and all the cool kids laughed at them.

I’ve been out & about today so have missed most of the day’s controversies but did someone suggest Marie Kondo is bad for telling people to get rid of books they don’t read
as if that isn’t … a perfectly normal thing that book-lovers do all the time
to make room for new books

And then someone did a mic drop.
Sure seems like the people who are furious about Marie Kondo throwing out books didn’t find out about her book until it was a tv show huh??
