Demi Lovato celebrates 6 months of sobriety: 'Best day ever'
Demi Lovato just reached an important milestone on her sobriety journey. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer is six months sober and is sharing the news with her fans.
Lovato took her Instagram stories to share a photo of her six-month chip, as well as a photo of a cake slice in honor of the moment.
“Happy 6 mo. We are so f***ing proud of you! Love, Team DL,” reads the note in front of the dessert from SusieCakes in Studio City, Calif.
Lovato has been open about her addiction struggles for years, and the six-month chip comes after a difficult time she faced last year. In July 2018, the singer was hospitalized after a reported overdose. She then entered a rehabilitation center in August and returned to Los Angeles after three months of treatment.
Since leaving rehab last year, Lovato has been relatively quiet on social media. But she pops onto Instagram from time to time to share messages of body positivity and occasional updates about her life. Lovato has also posted messages about her Grammy nomination with Christina Aguilera.
Before the hospitalization, Lovato had celebrated six years of sobriety. But in her song “Sober,” released last June, Lovato opened up about a relapse. “Mama, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore/And daddy please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor,” she sings in the lyrics. “To the ones who never left me/We’ve been down this road before/I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.” The honesty of her song lyrics shows how tough addiction is — but she’ll never stop fighting.
After the reports about Lovato’s hospitalization appeared, she shared an honest message about her struggle with addiction. The singer has since deleted her own Instagram post, but the same message is still live on her mom’s Instagram account.

“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” Lovato wrote. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”
