From teenage romances to high-profile relationships, Demi Lovato’s boyfriend and dating history spans over a decade in the spotlight. We’re talking Disney days, music industry matchups, whirlwind engagements, and everything in between—so, get ready for the ride.

Before we dive into the details, it’s worth noting that Demi’s own understanding of love and identity has evolved over time. In May 2021, the “Confident” singer came out as nonbinary, adopting they/them pronouns. However, about a year later, Demi reintroduced she/her pronouns as well, explaining on the “Spout Podcast” that she had been “feeling more feminine.”

When it comes to their romantic relationships, Demi doesn’t create too many labels for herself. In 2018, Lovato told InStyle, “I’m very fluid, and I think love is love. You can find it in any gender. I like the freedom of being able to flirt with whoever I want.” This openness continued in 2021 when Lovato came out as pansexual on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, saying, “Yeah, pansexual. I heard someone call the LGBTQIA+ community the ‘alphabet mafia,’ and I was like, ‘That’s it. That’s what I’m going with.’ I’m part of the alphabet mafia and proud.”

Now that we’ve set the stage, let’s take a look back at all the highlights of Demi Lovato’s boyfriend and dating history.

Cody Linley (2007-2008)

Lovato’s first public relationship was with Hannah Montana star Cody Linley. Their brief romance included a memorable date that didn’t go quite as planned. Linley shared with Seventeen at the time, “I was going to be picking Demi up around 7 p.m. and I didn’t get to pick her up until like 9. I had an audition in downtown Hollywood, and after my audition, my car broke down in, like, the worst place. It was really the most up and down night of my life.”

Lovato’s next relationship was with Metro Station member (and Miley Cyrus’ older brother) Trace Cyrus. Their romance was short-lived, lasting only a few months. Explaining the breakup, Cyrus told People, “Demi is one of my good friends and I definitely became very, very close with her in the past few months, and it’s something I really wanted to make work. But unfortunately, we both have very busy schedules […] I’m always on the other side of the world and so is she, so it just seemed like something that can’t work out at this time.”

He went on to suggest that their age difference—he was 20 at the time, while she was still 16—may have played a role in their split, too. “When someone is that much younger, you’re looking for different things in relationships. Maybe when she’s older and we’ve both matured, we’ll be looking for the same thing and it can work out.” Still, there were no hard feelings, and it seems to pair ended things on good terms.

Joe Jonas (2010)

Demi Lovato’s relationship with Joe Jonas was a highly publicized but relatively brief romance. Demi was the first to confirm they were dating during a March 2010 Access Hollywood interview, much to the delight of Camp Rock fans. Their relationship even seemed to be going strong when Teen Vogue published their joint magazine cover in June 2010. However, the fairy tale was short-lived—less than 48 hours after the interview, they called it quits.

Despite the quick end to their romantic relationship, Joe insisted the breakup was mutual. In a follow-up interview with Teen Vogue, he said, “In this business, it’s really hard to find people who are going to be there for the rest of your life. When I met Demi, I knew right away that our friendship was really strong. I don’t want to lose that ever.”

True to his word, Joe and Demi have maintained a supportive friendship over the years. When Joe proposed to Sophie Turner in 2017, Demi congratulated them on Instagram, showing that their bond has lasted even beyond their romantic relationship.

Wilmer Valderrama (2010 to 2016)

Wilmer Valderrama was Demi’s longest and perhaps most major relationship to date. The couple dated on and off for six years, with Wilmer being a constant support through some of Demi’s most challenging times.

In Demi’s 2017 documentary, Simply Complicated, the singer opened up about how the pair met when Demi was 17 and Wilmer was 19. According to Demi, the age gap was enough for Wilmer to be like, “Get away from me.” But they connected again after Demi’s 18th birthday and officially started dating. Demi said, “I think it was love at first sight. We connected on a level that I’ve never connected with anybody before. He was just my rock, my everything.”

In a 2015 interview with Cosmopolitan, Demi shared how Wilmer stood by them through their struggles with addiction—including relapsing, entering treatment facilities, and getting sober. They recalled that “he was like, ‘I’m not leaving. This is somebody I really care about.’”

Despite their strong bond, the couple announced their breakup in a joint statement to social media in 2016. “After almost six loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship,” the statement read. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends.”

Even after their split, Wilmer and Demi remained close. Valderrama reportedly visited Lovato during their 2018 hospitalization for a drug overdose. When Valderrama announced his engagement to model Amanda Pacheco in early 2020, a source told E! that Lovato was “happy for Wilmer if he’s happy.” The source went on to note that Lovato “always wants the best for him in life and is glad he has found love. They will always be friends and have a special place in each other’s hearts.”

Max Ehrich (2020)

Demi’s whirlwind romance with actor Max Ehrich began during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Us Weekly, the couple met only “a few weeks” before deciding to quarantine together in March 2020, and their relationship continued to move quickly, with Max proposing to Demi with a $500,000 ring after just a few months of dating in July 2020.

However, the relationship took a dramatic turn when fans dug up old social media posts, accusing Ehrich of comparing Lovato to her former best friend Selena Gomez before he and Demi started dating. While Demi initially dismissed fans’ concerns, this controversy eventually led to the end of their engagement in September 2020.

A source close to the situation told People, “It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers.” The insider added, “They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.”

The aftermath of their breakup was highly publicized, with Max being spotted by paparazzi crying on the beach where he and Demi had posed for engagement pictures. He later claimed on Instagram that he found out about the breakup through tabloids.

In their 2021 documentary Dancing With the Devil, Demi reflected on the relationship, saying, “The hardest part of the breakup was mourning the person I thought he was.” As another source revealed to E! News, Lovato realized they “didn’t know who Max truly was and didn’t think he had good intentions. There were many red flags she was ignoring and trying to turn a blind eye to.”

Demi Lovato started dating fellow musician Jordan Lutes in 2022. The couple’s story began in January of that year, when they first met while working on Lovato’s song “Substance.”

It wasn’t long before the pair went public with their relationship in August 2022, but as Lovato later revealed in a September 2024 interview with Teen Vogue, she “instantly had a crush” on the Canadian songwriter. Speaking about their relationship, Lovato gushed, “I live and breathe for our connection. Everything I do, I wish I was with him. I see my future with him. I see growing old with him.”

Throughout their relationship, Lovato has been vocal about their desire to marry Lutes. Speaking to Howard Stern in 2023, Lovato said, “I’m in an amazing relationship. My boyfriend is a year older than me, and we’re growing together and it feels so healthy.” They continued, “We started off as friends, and we built that foundation of friendship first. There’s this partnership there that is just so magnetic, and the way that we laugh together—it’s just nonstop.”

The singer’s dreams became reality in December 2023 when Lutes popped the question with a stunning pear-shaped diamond ring in a “personal and intimate proposal” in Los Angeles, according to Lovato’s rep. Reflecting on their relationship in September 2024, Lovato told People, “It’s very grounding to have a partner that is so supportive, so loving, so caring. And so, you know, it’s very easy to stay centered with him because I just—I love him so much and he treats me so amazing.”
