Deon Cole Reveals How Paul McCartney Accidentally Convinced Michael Jackson to Buy Beatles Publishing Rights
Deon Cole says that Paul McCartney got high and told him how Michael Jackson bought his publishing.
The comedian told the hosts of Power 105.1 The Breakfast Club how he spoke with McCartney before a show. According to Cole, the legendary musician got high and told him the story of how Jackson became interested in buying the publishing rights to the Beatles' song catalog.
Cole claimed that McCartney said that he was at a party with Jackson having a conversation about business. “Hey Mike, you need to jump on your business,” said Paul to Jackson, according to Cole. “You’ve got everything else, except your business affairs aren’t in order.”
Continuing on, McCartney told Jackson about the importance of owning publishing. “You need to own your publishing that’s where the money is — or own someone else’s publishing,” said McCartney, allegedly.
This prompted Jackson to ask whose publishing he should pursue, leading to McCartney suggesting that he go after the most popular artists he could find. After Jackson jokingly suggested he’d buy McCartney’s publishing, the duo laughed about it.
Cole explained that McCartney realized a short time later that Jackson was actually serious and actually bought his publishing. Attempting to use this to his advantage, McCartney allegedly went to Jackson with the hopes that he could help him out when it came to the money involved with the publishing deal.
“Since Mike owned the publishing, they thought Mike is our friend, he'll give us a bump,” said Cole about McCartney and John Lennon. “He went to him and Michael said, ‘No it’s business’ and then he said that’s when he they stopped talking.”
Last month, McCartney joined Cole onstage at the Hollywood Improv, which is presumably when the comedian learned about this alleged Jackson story. During his set, Cole brought McCartney to the stage, saying that they got high together on some “good shit” before the set. “I had to smoke, and that’s why this is happening,” said McCartney.
After Cole told the crowd that they “did not give no love at all to me tonight,” McCartney grabbed the microphone to say, “I’ve been enjoying seeing you working through this material. You’re right, some of it bombed.”
