Derek Hough Says Wife Hayley Erbert Is “Doing Well,” But Needs A Skull Implant To Protect Her Brain
UPDATED with latest: For the first time in a week, Derek Hough shared an update about his wife Hayley Erbert’s condition, and even a short video of the two of them walking on the Capitol Reflecting Pool on the National Mall.
In an Instagram post last Thursday, Hough revealed that his wife of only three months “became disoriented and was taken to the hospital” while on their Symphony of Dance tour. A craniectomy is a type of surgery to remove a portion of the skull to help relieve extra pressure on the brain.

Today, he revealed that while his wife is up and walking, Erbert needs more medical care.
“She still has a ways to go with another surgery, hopefully in a few weeks, to insert a skull implant to replace the piece that was removed during the craniectomy. It will restore the skull to its natural shape and protect the brain from injury.” (She wears a protective helmet in the video.)
After effusively thanking fans for their support, Hough ended with, “While this isn’t the holiday season either of us envisioned, it’s one that we’re incredibly grateful to have. We look forward to cherishing these moments with a deeper appreciation for life and the people in it.”
