Detroit funeral arrangements set for Motown's late Barrett Strong

Motown singer-songwriter Barrett Strong will be laid to rest in Detroit on March 4, his family said this week.

Strong, the voice of "Money" and coauthor of massive hits for Marvin Gaye, the Temptations and others, died Jan. 28 in Los Angeles at 81.

A funeral will take place at 11 a.m. March 4 at Greater Grace Temple, 23500 W. Seven Mile in Detroit, with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

A public viewing will be 6-8 p.m. March 3 at O.H. Pye III Funeral Home, 17600 Plymouth Road in Detroit.

Strong, who grew up in Detroit, was among Motown's earliest artists, landing a hit in 1959 with "Money (That's What I Want)" before going on to collaborate with producer Norman Whitfield on work for Gaye ("I Heard It Through the Grapevine"), the Temptations ("Cloud Nine," "I Wish it Would Rain," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone"), Edwin Starr ("War") and others. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
