'Devo' documentary set for closing night of Cleveland International Film Festival
The 48th Cleveland International Film Festival will take on a distinctly Akron flavor for opening night.
The documentary “Devo,” the story of the influential Rubber City-based rock band that broke new ground in music with its sound and attitude will serve as the closing night film.
Using interviews with founding members Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale, it looks at the band’s expansive career from its founding at Kent State University to mainstream success, which included hits like “Whip It” along with serving as pioneers in the music video boom of the early 1980s, a medium that was just beginning to take off because of MTV.

The movie premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews with “Variety” film critic Owen Gleiberman calling it “every bit as fun as its subject.”
“For Devo fans, it’s 90 minutes of irresistible pop history and dazzlingly edited surrealist audio-visual candy,” he wrote.
The CIFF48 will run April 3-13 at Playhouse Square. The full festival lineup will be announced March 8 with CIFF members able to purchase tickets March 15. Tickets to the general public go on sale March 22. For more information go to clevelandfilm.org.
