Did Jelly Roll break his CMA Award? Not quite, here's why.

Jelly Roll had a momentous night at Wednesday evening's Country Music Association awards ceremony, where he took home his first CMA award and gave a rousing speech. But, his big night ended with a big oops.

Jelly Roll, an Antioch-born artist known for songs "Save Me" and "Need a Favor," won the Best New Artist of 2023 CMA Award. Shortly after speaking with The Tennessean at the 57th Annual CMA Awards, the country singer dropped and shattered the award he was handed on stage.

After the ceremony, Jelly headed backstage at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville to chat with the media. When he finished talking to the press, Jelly Roll dropped the award which broke into pieces on the ground.

But—it's nothing to be too worried about! According to a CMA official,  the trophies used backstage are generic stage trophies.

Since the Country Music Association doesn't know the award winners in advance, none of the trophies onstage have been engraved yet. The stage award trophies are just used for photos and returned at the end of the night.

Luckily, the trophy that Jelly dropped was one of the stage trophies. His actual trophy, with official engraving, will be sent at a later date.

What was Jelly Roll's reaction to shattering his CMA award?

After the incident, Jelly Roll spoke with Entertainment Tonight, saying, "I’m so embarrassed. I was so excited. I was swinging around to let somebody hold it. I’d been passing it around like a bag of popcorn. I’ve been just letting everybody … like a bag of potatoes, like we were just all sharing or something. I feel bad. Oh God.”

Jelly's short-lived time with his stage trophy, though brief, was iconic. The Best New Artist took to the stage at the CMA Awards and powerfully preached to the audience after his win. He said, “There’s something poetic about a 39-year-old man winning new artist of the year.

"I don’t know where you’re at in your life or what you’re going through, but I want to tell you to keep going, baby. I want to tell you, ‘Success is on the other side.'

“I want to tell you, ‘It’s going to be OK!’ I want to tell you that the windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror for a reason, because what’s in front of you is so much more important than what’s behind you!”

At the end of his speech, Jelly held his trophy up to the audience and yelled, “Let’s party, Nashville!” The crowd rose to their feet in a standing ovation.

Performances from Jelly Roll both opened and closed the night's CMA Awards ceremony.

Jelly Roll kicked off the 2023 CMA Awards by singing "Need a Favor" with country icon Wynonna Judd. The two gave a powerful performance with a choir behind them, singing, "I only talk to God when I need a favor / And I only pray when I ain't got a prayer."

Later in the evening, Jelly Roll's performance with Judd came full circle. He hit the stage again with hip-hop singer K. Michelle and the two performed a tribute to The Judds, singing "Love Can Build A Bridge."

The two sang The Judds' hit with soul and power, a rousing tribute to the mother-daughter duo of Wynonna and Naomi Judd, who died at age 76 last year.

Jelly Roll's evening, from two performances to a standing ovation in response to his speech, was filled with no dull moments.

And though Jelly's evening ended with glass fragments, the CMA 2023 Best New Artist, more importantly, shattered expectations and career goals as he reached new heights on Wednesday evening.
