In the 30-second preview, viewers are green with a shot of a Disney-like sand castle with the backdrop of a beautiful blue ocean. However, the beautiful shot is destroyed when Stitch comes stomping and smashing the castle away.
Newcomer Maia Kealoha plays Lilo in the live-action version of the Hawaii-set 2002 animated pic. The new take was originally developed for Disney+ before shifting to a theatrical release. The cast also includes Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, Sydney Agudong, Kaipo Dudoit, Tia Carrere, Courtney B. Vance, Amy Hill, Jason Scott Lee, and Hannah Waddingham.
Dean Fleischer Camp directs the film, which follows the relationship between a lonely girl named Lilo and Stitch, an alien engineered to be a force of destruction.
Chris Kekaniokalani Bright wrote the script from a previous draft by Mike Van Waes. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich produce for Rideback, with Ryan Halprin, exec producing for the company.
Lilo & Stitch is based on the 2022 animated film written and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. Following the success of the feature film, a directed-to-video sequel titled Stitch! The Movie was released in 2003 and would subsequently serve as a pilot for the TV series Lilo & Stitch: The Series, which ran for 65 episodes.
A sequel titled Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch was released in 2005, and another sequel titled Leroy & Stitch, which wrapped the TV series, premiered in 2006.
Lilo & Stitch live-action will open on May 23, 2025.
