‘Doctor Who’ Alum Karen Gillan Would Like a Woman to Take Over the Role of the Doctor
Karen Gillan played companion Amy Pond on Doctor Who for three seasons, so she knows a thing or two about going on adventures with the raggedy alien with two hearts who travels through time and space in a blue box. On This Morning, a British talk show, the actress spoke about how she’d love to see the next actor to play the Doctor be a woman.
The Doctor regenerates and switches bodies every few seasons or so and has been portrayed by 13 different actors on TV but has never been played by a woman. Gillan said she really would like to see the next Doctor be a woman, adding: “Actually, just because so many people have questioned whether a woman can play the role, and I think that’s completely ridiculous. Like, of course, an actress can play the role.”
A few of the names fans have thrown out for women who would do well in the role are Agent Carter‘s Hayley Atwell, Tilda Swinton and Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer.
