Doctor Odyssey Recap: Tristan Faces Someone From His Past — Plus, Who Was the Ship’s First Casualty?
Well, that was quick. After just three episodes, Doctor Odyssey has faced its first on-board casualty.
But before we get to that tragedy, let’s keep it frothy, shiny and light — what we thought Plastic Surgery Week would deliver!
More from TVLine
Thursday’s episode of the freshman ABC drama begins with guest star Gina Gershon boarding the ship, treating her highest-paying clients to a luxurious cruise while they recover from various elective procedures. (Oh, she also has a “lady boner” for Captain Massey, despite being married to the ship’s owner.)
But The Odyssey boasts an even more surprising guest than the Riverdale vet: Tristan’s mother — whose presence delivers the first indication that a crew member might live an actual life on land. (Don’t worry: Our fever dream theory isn’t shattered yet!) But her trip isn’t smooth sailing. After collapsing during a tense dinner with her son, Tristan’s mother discovers that she’s dying: The crew diagnoses her with Huntington’s disease.
Elsewhere, Dr. Max is starstruck by guest star Justin Jedlica, the social media personality who is known as the “Human Ken.” (Max is a man of multitudes, this we know!) After divulging his fear of fatal sepsis and sharing a sweet moment with Max, Human Ken dies in his sleep during the first night of the cruise. Though his demise isn’t without dramatics. Human Ken’s death was preceded by a musical montage that brought us to the edge of our seat, wondering if this would be the Phillipa Soo-led musical episode TVLine predicted. (It wasn’t!)
After the crew fails to resuscitate Human Ken, they wheel him down to the morgue via a room service cart. (They couldn’t risk puncturing the dreamy Odyssey vibe!) Later, Max reveals his connection to the reality star: Max binged Human Ken’s TV show in the hospital while suffering from COVID. (Naturally, this revelation leads to a makeout session with Avery.)
Other cases of the week include a spooky, botched rhinoplasty that leaves a passenger looking more like a carved pumpkin than a human woman, and an infection brought on by frostbite after a woman over-ices her breast implants.
The episode ends with Tristan admitting his shortcomings: He never loved Avery, he was simply suffering from a bad case of Mommy Issues. (Can’t say we’re surprised.)
