Doctor Odyssey’s Sean Teale Delivers a Halloween Week Jump-Scare Tease: Was Tristan (Gasp!) Not Always a Dreamboat?
It’s almost cuffing season, and Doctor Odyssey is spoon-feeding us just what we need: a complicated bad boy we just know we can fix. (No, really. We can!)
So far on the ABC medical drama (new episodes air Thursdays at 9/8c), we’ve come to know nurse Tristan Silva as a rambunctious man-child with a wandering eye — someone we might nominate to join Season 4 of FBoy Island. Though Tristan is definitely a playboy, he’s somehow completely won us over. So that’s why we feel vindicated when Sean Teale, who plays the Odyssey nurse, assures TVLine there’s more to his character than meets the eye.

“I don’t think he always was the way that he is,” Teale says. “And I think, maybe further down the line, you’ll realize he maybe didn’t always aesthetically appear the way that he does now, and so he’s trying to maximize on that.”
We knew there was depth to be mined here, but a swoon-worthy man in STEM who struggled with self-esteem in his youth? It’s almost too good to be true.
“The confidence that Tristan has in his later life is not something that he had in himself — or in his appearance — when he was younger,” Teale adds, though he says flashbacks of his young life on land are unlikely.
So let’s have some understanding! While Tristan is philandering with a new woman every week, it’s simply a result of his own insecurities. Tristan’s never-ending pursuit of romance and sex is like getting breakup bangs — a superficial reaction to combat deep-rooted emotion. The man is “seeking love, needing love, wanting to connect,” Teale says.
As of Episode 4, his affections have landed on Vivian (played by BlacKkKlansman‘s Laura Harrier), the ship’s new chef. But what does Halloween Week have in store for Tristan and the rest of the crew?
Teale couldn’t say much, but shared that the ship will be rocked by a “zombie-like disease” and his character will be left behind while Max and Avery embark on a rescue mission. As for reaching Tristan’s darkest depths, we’ll have to wait. This week, Teale says the man is preoccupied with a costume contest.
