They say two’s company and three’s a crowd — but does the age-old adage apply in international waters?

ABC’s Doctor Odyssey is zeroing in on the complicated dynamics among its crew. Week after week, we witness playboys Max (played by Joshua Jackson) and Tristan (Sean Teale) battle it out for Avery’s (Phillipa Soo) attention. But is the central conflict, the “triangle of rivalry,” as Teale calls it, merely a macho charade? Could it all be a red herring for the glorious thing that’s really forming right before our eyes? Yes, we’re talking about a throuple (aka a committed, romantic relationship involving three people).

“The great thing about TV shows is there’s lots of episodes,” Teale tells TVLine. “[There’s] plenty of growth for everyone to go through and loads of experiences that can shape people and shift states and alter relationships, and, let’s say, expand dynamics — or [deepen] them.”

Teale adds that a throuple is “always going to be a discussion, and we knew that when we started,” because of the close and complicated nature of the relationships aboard The Odyssey.

“I love that people think about this and want this,” he admits.

But is there any real evidence of a budding affinity between Max and Tristan to suggest that the pair could thrive in a throuple? Outside of the competitive aspect of their relationship, Teale says Tristan sees Max as a teacher, a successful medical professional and a wise mentor. Max fills “some role that Tristan hasn’t always had, which is of a fatherly, brotherly uncle, a familial-type figure.”

But fear not! A throuple is not off the table. (It’s giving Oedipus Complex!) Teale assures us that nothing can be taken too literally when it comes to Doctor Odyssey, because after all, “It is a Ryan Murphy show.”
