Documentary Chronicling Shyne’s Rap And Political Career Coming To Hulu
A documentary about the rise, fall, and redemption of former rap star-turned-politician Shyne is headed to Hulu.
On Tuesday (Oct. 22), a trailer for the project titled The Honorable Shyne was unveiled, which includes appearances and commentary from Don Pooh, Barrington Levy, Kevin Liles, Faith Evans, Noreaga, Charlamagne Tha God, and Shyne himself.
In the 2:29 clip, Shyne and others summarize his journey from the hardscrabble streets of Flatbush, Brooklyn to the heights of Hip-Hop as a prized prospect on popular rap label Bad Boy Records.
“Everybody that heard me, wanted to sign me,” Shyne recalls in the trailer, referencing the hype surrounding himself during the late ’90s. Around that period, the Brooklynite garnered comparisons to late rap star and former Bad Boy artist The Notorious B.I.G., who passed away in 1997, a year prior to Shyne signing with the label.
The short also mentions the infamous Club New York shooting involving himself and Bad Boy Records founder Sean “Diddy” Combs in December 1999. “I was absolutely set up to be the fall guy,” Shyne said of the incident that landed him a ten-year prison sentence and deportation to Belize following his release from prison.
The film will also examine the former lyricist’s return to his home country and foray into politics, including him being appointed Prime Minister of Belize.
“The Honorable Shyne tells the remarkable story of Moses ‘Shyne’ Barrow, the Grammy Award-winning musician turned politician,” reads a synopsis of the documentary.
“A rising star in the late 1990s, Shyne’s promising rap career was cut short after he was charged in a high-profile New York nightclub shooting, along with rap impresario Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs. Shyne was convicted in 2001 and sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Combs was acquitted.
“After prison, Shyne reemerged in his native Belize, where he transitioned from music to politics, ultimately becoming the Leader of the Opposition Party. His journey is one of redemption, resilience and transformation. This documentary provides an intimate look at Shyne’s personal evolution as he navigates fame, incarceration and a return home to Belize, where he finds new purpose and strives to lead his country to a brighter future.”
The Honorable Shyne is directed by Marcus A. Clarke; produced by Jason Perez; executive produced by Dwayne Bray, Talitha Watkins, Jason Aidoo, Carolina Groppa, Angela Augustus, James Shani, Ameer Collier and Steve Carless; and co-executive produced by David Dennis, Jr. and Justin Tinsley.
