With Olympic season only recently wrapping up, it seems as if everyone is testing their abilities to see if they have the skills of their favorite athletes hidden away somewhere deep down — and it looks like humans aren’t the only ones doing so!

In a now viral video shared by the organization Gone Whale Watching, several bottlenose dolphins were taped doing a series of impressive jumps out of the water off the coast of San Diego, California.
Erica Sackrison, an operator of the whale watching company, recorded the footage on August 12 when she was shocked by the behavior of the sea-creatures she was witnessing.
"You could just see them jumping like, 20 feet in the air, and everybody on the boat just started pointing and I'm like, ‘What is everybody looking at?’,” she recalled to KFMB. “Almost feels like they were doing Olympic-style jumps, like they were just all trying to be like Simone Biles and just touch the sky and come down. It was awesome," she beamed.

The now viral video has been circulating all across social media, and the video shared to Gone Whale Watching’s Instagram page has gotten many talking about the marvel that are these animals.
“I was on this trip and it was amazing! We had such amazing wildlife sightings!,” one user excitedly shared. “Dolphins love to play and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were trying to see who could jump the highest,” added another user.

Sackrison also shared that this particular day was out of the ordinary, as every few miles, she and her group would come across multiple, large pods, making for a fantastic day of watching. As for why there was a much greater wildlife presence, the explanation is simple.
Why were there so many dolphins present?
According to the company’s founder, Domenic Biagini, the food source in the area explains their increased presence. He explained that while anchovies are a major food source for the common dolphin, a rise in the number of squid is likely the reason for the increase in bottlenose dolphins in the area. But that’s not all — he even shared that there’s been more sightings of sharks, spotting a great white for only the second time offshore not too long ago.
For those who might want to pursue their own dolphin or shark spotting adventures, Biagini warns, "When you're in our very, very shallow coastal waters here, it's really crucial to keep your speed down, because you don't know what might be just beneath the surface.”
