John Oliver back with an examination of Trump's foreign policy
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver returned Sunday, and the host spent most of the time breaking down Donald Trump‘s foreign policy — or lack thereof.
Oliver pointed out that Trump’s “America first” policy has opened the door for other countries, like China, to take leadership roles in the world, and Trump himself is being mocked across the globe. So the foreigner who now calls America home wanted to remind the rest of the world that while there are some bad things about America, there’s a lot of really great stuff. Oliver said, “America is the country that gave you Star Wars. You’re welcome. And Scientology. We’re sorry.”
The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus came on to sing Smash Mouth’s “All Star,” which Oliver called “a terrible, stupid song being sung absolutely beautifully. … This should be our national anthem!”
In the end, Oliver didn’t want the rest of the world to forget that America is much more than just Donald Trump. With the chorus still singing behind him, Oliver said, “Please remember that this is the country of Donald Trump, but it’s also the country of people profoundly embarrassed by him.”
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver airs Sundays at 11 p.m. on HBO.
