Drew Barrymore says she got over the shame of being divorced and now sees it as a way to save time
Drew Barrymore shared on "The Drew Barrymore Show" that she got over the shame of being divorced.
She now sees it as a way of "saving the precious commodity we have on this planet, which is only our time."
Barrymore has been married three times and has two daughters.
Drew Barrymore opened up about how she overcame the shame of being divorced during Tuesday's episode of "The Drew Barrymore Show," featuring guest Marie Osmond.
"I had so much shame around divorce and, for some reason, something happened, and I said, 'I'm no longer willing to feel this way.' And it just lifted from me," Barrymore said.
"I just thought, when you get a divorce, you're saving the precious commodity we have on this planet, which is only our time," she added.
Barrymore has been married three times.
In 1994, she married Jeremy Thomas after six weeks of dating, but they split less than three weeks later. In 2001, she married comedian Tom Green. He filed for divorce months later. In 2012, Barrymore married Will Kopelman. They share two daughters together and divorced in 2016.
Reflecting on her marriages, Barrymore said she realized it made more sense to let go when things weren't working out.
"And when you're truly in a situation that isn't functioning the way that — optimally — it hopes and wishes to be, we accept that, and we improve our quality of life by moving forward," she said. "Divorce now, to me, I don't have shame around it. I'm like totally liberated."
The topic of divorce came about while Barrymore and Osmond were discussing Jennifer Lopez's "Can't Get Enough" music video. In the music video, Lopez poked fun at herself for being a four-time bride.
Before marrying Ben Affleck in July 2022, Lopez was previously married to Ojani Noa, Cris Judd, and singer Marc Anthony — with whom she shares two children.
Lopez told US Weekly in 2015 that she learned to get over feeling like a failure when her marriage to Anthony ended.
"I'm grateful for all those trials and tribulations because with that you gain perseverance and the desire to learn and grow," Lopez said. "So I'm happy about those experiences now."
Barrymore and Lopez aren't the only celebrities who are reflecting on failed marriages.
In 2018, Jenna Dewan told Women's Health that the experience of splitting from her ex, Channing Tatum, has helped her grow.
"I feel I've been on a wave of growth," she said. "It's always challenging to go through a big change and have the whole world have an opinion about it."
More recently, Shakira said in an Apple Music interview that it was "good to not have a husband" because it was dragging her down.
