The following contains spoilers from the Nov. 24 episode of HBO’s Dune: Prophecy.

Well, damn. The Agony is well-named.

Episode 2 of HBO’s preeeeeequel to the Dune film franchise dealt with the aftermath of Demond Hart’s brutal/casual immolation of both Princess’ Ynez’s wee groom-to-be and Emperor Corrino’s Truthsayer Kasha.

While Valya (with Theodosia in tow) embarked for Salusa Secundus, to confront the Emperor about the suspect he pretended not to have in custody, Tula was tasked with subjecting the acolyte Lila to The Agony, the process by which a sister is forced to metabolize an ingested poison on a molecular level. Valya’s thinking was that, in doing so, Lila could make contact with her ancestors — namely, the late Reverend Mother Raquella, to pump her for any additional details on the tyrant/reckoning prophecy.

Until now, all Lila knew of her lineage was that her mother (reportedly) died in childbirth, after which Tula herself raised her. So to be asked to endure this ritual, at the very least, “finally answers a question that has been on Lila’s mind since birth,” portrayer Chloe Lea tells TVLine.

“She’s never really know who her family is, where she comes from,” notes the young actress. As such, “She’s always been very jealous of the other sisters knowing exactly who they are.”

Being given the chance to level that play field with her peers “motivates Lila, because now she has a purpose,” says Lea. “Now she she knows exactly what she has to do — even if its terrifying. Lila is just grateful that she gets to serve something that’s very important to her.”

Alas, it appears Lila’s service to the sisterhood is cut short.

During The Agony, Lila does procure more cryptic intel on her great-great-grandmother Raquella’s prophecy — “The key to the reckoning is one born twice; once in blood, once in spice,” and “A revenant full of scars. A weapon born of war on a path too short.” But then her dead grandmother, Dorotea, crashes the supernatural party to exact revenge on Valya, for compelling her via The Voice to slit her throat decades prior.

“Harkonnen, you stole my future,” Dorotea declared through Lila, who bolted upright in the Wallach IX med bay. “Now I’m taking your hope.”

And with that said, Lila died.

Though… the promo for Episode 3 (watch below) suggests that Tula will attempt to being the lass back to life, through some verboten process.

WILL LILA COME BACK FROM THE DEAD?

Will Tula succeed in her bold move to revive Lila? Well, we’ll say this — Lila’s portrayer, when speaking with TVLine ahead of the season, had some strong opinions about her favorite episode, which is the series’ sixth aka the Season 1 finale, airing several weeks from now/after Lila’s apparent death.

As that episode comes to a close, Lea previews, “Everyone is going to be like, ‘OK, what does this mean for Season 2, HBO?’ The end of it, especially, really challenges the trajectory of the Sisterhood, which I think is really cool.”

All told, both Lea and co-star Jade Anouka (who plays Theodosia) raved that the season finale is no less than “insane.”
