You probably know Jerrod Carmichael. He's a talented comedian and actor.
He's also the host of this year's Golden Globes!
Well, during his opening monologue, Jerrod called out the history of the Hollywood Foreign Press and its glaring lack of diversity for years. He then segued into what it took for him to accept the hosting gig, based on this.
He said he called his friend Avery to ask for advice. "I said to Avery, 'They asked me to host the Golden Globes.' I said, 'What do I do?'"
Avery said she was super proud of him. She then said, "Remind me, which award show is that again?" Jerrod told her what the Globes were, and how the Hollywood Foreign Press had zero Black members until recently.
Her response: "Well, how much are they paying you?"
"I said, 'Well, Avery, honestly it's not about the money," Jerrod continued. "It's about the moral question of whether..." But Avery cut him off and asked again, "Jerrod, how much are they paying you?"
"I said $500,000," Jerrod said.
And then Avery told him, "Boy, if you don't put on a good suit and take the white people's money." The joke landed pretty well and people roared:
