Dwayne Johnson reveals 'Moana' live-action remake: 'This story is my culture'
Get ready to say aloha to a new Moana.
The 2016 animated comedy about a young Pacific Islander woman named Moana is getting a live-action remake, "Moana" star Dwayne Johnson revealed in a recorded message Monday. The announcement was also shared by Disney CEO Bob Iger during a Walt Disney Company shareholders meeting.
"I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen," Johnson said in a statement. "This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength."
The upcoming film, which is in development, will "celebrate the islands, communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pave her own path." Johnson, who voiced Maui in the original film alongside Auli‘i Cravalho as Moana, is set to take part in the live-action adaptation, though his role has not been confirmed.
"I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this (is a) once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivi," Johnson said.

Released in 2016, "Moana" grossed nearly $644 million at the global box office and was among the top 15 films streamed in the U.S. in 2022. The film's soundtrack, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i and Mark Mancina, won Miranda a Grammy Award for best song written for visual media, as well as an Oscar nomination for best achievement in music written for motion pictures (original song) for "How Far I’ll Go."
"She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses," Cravalho said in a statement. "Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring — to audiences around the world, to me and to everyone who helped bring her to life."
