Dancing With the Stars fans were initially unimpressed about conwoman Anna Delvey’s casting and, after her first week’s performance, they hadn’t warmed up to her at all. Many thought Delvey seemed like she didn’t even want to be on the show, so her elimination during the second week didn’t come as much of a surprise.

Delvey’s parting words (well… word) from the show also rubbed people the wrong way. At the end of the September 24 show, when host Julianne Hough asked Delvey what she was taking away from her experience on DWTS, she had a simple one word response: “Nothing.”

Her Dancing With the Stars pro partner Ezra Sosa seemed taken aback but stood by with a smile as the credits rolled. Many viewers thought the comment came across as rude and entitled. Delvey perhaps could have given a more thoughtful response after reflecting on her short time on the show.

In a  September 25 Instagram post, Delvey appeared to have a laugh at herself and clap back at the haters. She shared the clip of her response to Hough — after she said “Nothing,” the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme music played. It was truly a Larry David moment.

Hough was clearly not offended by Delvey’s candid answer. She commented on the Instagram post, “Iconic ????.”

Her dance partner simply commented “???♂?.” When one fan responded to Sosa, writing, “You have to love how sweet and honest she is,” he commented, “SHE REALLY IS. Loved dancing with her xx.”

On September 23, Sosa posted a TikTok video that addressed the negativity Delvey had received during the competition.

“On my end, I was feeling so much positivity,” he said. “On my partner’s end, she wasn’t receiving the same. I think the hardest part of my day after [the] press line, she was reading the comments and we couldn’t find her. They finally found her in the bathroom. She was crying. I’ve never seen her like that, and it broke my heart.”

The dance pro noted that Delvey’s crimes were “really controversial” and “not right,” but he explained, “No one deserves the amount of hate that she’s getting right now.” He added, “She deserves a second chance. She has stepped up to the plate, and I just cannot wait for y’all to see how much she has improved.”

In a post-show interview with Good Morning America, Delvey was asked about her time on the show and remarked, “It was a new experience, it was exciting.” But when asked about her favorite part of being on Dancing With the Stars, she responded, “Getting eliminated.”

Sosa put her on the right track and lightened the mood. “That’s not the right answer,” he said… so Delvey changed her answer to “Ezra.” She also said it was “very sad” to be leaving and said that she had “wasted” her second chance.

In a September 25 interview with Extra, the DWTS pro weighed in on Delvey’s response to Hough after being eliminated. “I knew she was going to say something very iconic and something very ‘Anna Delvey’ with her exit. Of course she has to — it’s very typical. We would expect nothing less of her,” he said.

And backstage, Sosa said Delvey was apologetic. “She honestly kept on apologizing to me. She felt super sorry that my first season was cut short,” he said.

The pro hoped they could have had more weeks with her on the dance floor. Perhaps people would have seen “How incredibly sweet she is and how misunderstood she is…” he said. “I really tried my best to see her for the person she is outside the persona.”

He added, “I really did love getting to know her and getting to dance with her every day, she really is such a lovely person.”
