DWTS’ Derek Hough Shares Emotional Dance With Wife Hayley Erbert After Her Near-Fatal Illness — Watch Video
Dancing With the Stars has no shortage of tear-jerking moments from its celebrity contestants, but the most emotional one this week came from a judge — and his pro dancer wife.
Derek Hough took to the ballroom floor on Tuesday’s episode for an emotional contemporary dance with his wife, former DWTS troupe dancer Hayley Erbert, for the first time since she suffered a near-fatal cranial hematoma last December.

In a pre-taped intro, Hough explained that he and Erbert had just gotten married last year and had gone out on tour when “it all just came to a screeching halt in the most devastating way.” Erbert suffered a seizure backstage during a performance and was rushed to the hospital for “a severe brain bleed,” undergoing emergency surgery. Doctors warned Hough that she may never be the same again, he tearfully recalled, but she slowly but surely recovered — with Hough calling his wife “a beautiful miracle.”
Hough and Erbert then did a heart-wrenching but ultimately triumphant contemporary routine set to Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things,” and afterwards, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The two of them weren’t scored for their performance, of course — but if they had been, we’d give them 10s across the board.
